2) How could this have happened? Why didn't the OAH find out about the reputation of the Adam's Mark chain before January of this year?

In the past, like many academic organizations, OAH negotiated exclusively with hotels and convention and visitors bureaus when selecting annual meeting locations. In the future, we will more extensively consult OAH members, historians, and others in the local communities being considered for annual meetings.

It was not until the U.S. Department of Justice sued the entire Adam's Mark chain on 16 December 1999 that we became aware that the corporation's problems extended beyond the Daytona Beach facility.
