2005 OAH Annual Meeting Update

Hotels
OAH staff are completing negotiations with the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and five hotels to host the 2005 Annual Meeting. Located in downtown San Jose, the convention center and three adjacent hotels are four blocks west of San Jose State University. A short distance away are the other two hotels which are connected by the the light rail line to the convention center. OAH will also provide a shuttle service from these hotels to the convention center.

There are plenty of rooms available for OAH attendees, more, in fact, than at the original convention hotel in San Francisco, and the rooms are less expensive. In keeping with OAH policy, most are at hotels that use union labor.

Air Travel
When you make your travel plans to San Jose you should consider all three Bay Area airports:

The closest and most convenient is the San Jose facility from which several of the convention hotels provide free shuttle service. Airfares to San Francisco and Oakland may be less expensive, and commercial shuttles offer service at both airports to the San Jose Convention Center and hotels.

Local Resources
Last week, several OAH staff flew to San Jose and San Francisco to speak with hotel and convention center officials. (See their online photo album.) OAH executive director Lee Formwalt met with OAH members and other historians at Santa Clara University and San Jose State University to discuss finding offsite venues for the Friday afternoon sessions that will be moved to San Jose. At least two of the San Francisco offsite sessions will remain in that city and OAH will provide transportation to members wishing to attend them as well as for those who wish to spend Friday afternoon in San Francisco.

Our 2005 Annual Meeting in San Jose meeting retains the main features of the meeting originally planned for San Francisco and includes new events that take advantage of the new location, California's third largest city. Among the additions we are considering are a San Jose-Santa Clara Mission tour on Saturday afternoon as well as sessions in such interesting venues as the brand new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library (jointly operated by the city of San Jose and San Jose State University) with its special California and John Steinbeck collections. Other venues we are exploring for sessions include:
