SCRANTON (PA.) SCRANTONIAN APRIL 29, 1934 A significant news item that attracted attention a few days ago came from Lexington, Mass., where the people more than a century and a half ago stood up against the British troops and made the first effective move for freedom. In that historic region 1,000 citizens have gone upon record and protesting against the trend of affairs that seem to move this nation further into the throes of socialism and deprive the citizens of the right for which the sons of the revolution battled and died. Among other things, the people of Lexington, where the Minute Men stood before the advancing British soldiers, protest against federal interference in business under the guise of promoting social reform and economic recovery. . . . Coming from the land where the patriots made the first stand before the oppressors of liberty, this protest seems significant. The people of the country have been patient under many conditions that have been unusual. They have submitted to strange rules and regulations under the assertions that emergency demanded quick and drastic action. But when it becomes apparent that "brain trusts" and other advisers of the administration are directing the affairs of state toward socialism it is time that protests should be heard. Probably no more suitable location in which to start the ball rolling is the sacred soil of New England where lovers of liberty a century and a half ago died that we might be free. |
