Diagram I ( -1938)
- Number of players: from five to ten, changed to from six to nine.
- Zone of play: The court is divided into three equal sections. The forwards from one team and the guards from the other would occupy the same section. Those in the center section passed the ball to their forwards or received passes from their guards.
- Only the forwards could shoot for a basket.
- Time possession: holding ball longer than three seconds constitutes a foul.
- Snatching and batting of the ball not allowed; no physical contact while guarding.
- Three-bounce dribble, knee high; during this time revisions included eliminating dribbling or using one dribble.
Diagram II (1938-1971)
- Number of players: six.
- Zone of play: court divided into two equal sections; after 1962, each team allowed two roving players who played the entire court.
- Only the forwards could shoot for a basket; later rovers could shoot.
- Players could hold the ball only three seconds.
- Players could take ball from their opponent or tie it up.
- Two-bounce dribble.
Diagram III (1971- )
- Number of players: five.
- Zone of play: full court.
- Any player can shoot for a basket.
- A player can hold the ball indefinitely unless being closely guarded. If guarded, possession is limited to five seconds.
- Unlimited dribbling.
